Author Biography

XUE MO

Xue Mo was bornina remote villageinthe Liangzhou district of Gansu province.Despite growing up in an environment surroundedby poverty, sand, and drought,he was fortunateto have a loving family. Although his parents were illiterate, Xue Mo yearned to become a writer from a young age. Due to limited access to books in his village,he drew inspiration from the many stories told by relatives and guests, traditional Xianxiao music performed by blind street musicianswith sanxian (a three-stringed lute), and the classic tales of the Monkey King’s adventuresin Journey to the  West. Xue Mo admired the Monkey King’s incredible strength, supernatural powers, and his quest to bring Buddhist scriptures from India to China. He literally memorized all the storiesand retold themto his father’s delight.

We have collaborated with renowned publishing
houses and translators from over 25 countries
around the world.

For instance, the works of Xuemo have been translated into nearly 30 languages and have been published successively.

Testimonials

Our Happy Readers

It was a totally fresh experience for me to read and translate Xue Mo’s works. His novels are filled with a unique appeal of western China’s rural wildness. Through his words, I can feel the destructive power of the vast desert, and its incomparable beauty.

—English  Translator  Howard Goldblatt and Dr. Sylvia Li-chun Lin

Xue Mo’s works introduce to the world the contemporary survival in northwestern China, including physical survival , spiritual survival, the survival of nature, and the survival of culture, and all of these test the people’s ability to resist, survive, and laugh on tough experience. His novels not only bring us artistic enjoyment, but also enlightenment and redemption to some extent.

—Liljana Ars ovska, Spanish Translator from Mexico
